TALKING ABOUT THE RIGHT TO EDUCATION

TALKING ABOUT THE RIGHT TO EDUCATION

According to Edward Everett, American politician, Pastor, Diplomat and a great orator,“Education is a better safeguard of liberty than a standing army.  Any country’s advancement depends upon the presence of basic civil right of Education to all the citizens. Education is essential for creating Equality and eliminating the barriers and discrimination on the basis of race, gender and economic status. It was for the same right of education, for which Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani school girl was shot in head by Taliban. But she survived the attack and has since become a global advocate for human rights, women’s rights and right to Education to childrens . For the same reason The Nobel Peace Prize 2014 was awarded jointly to Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzai “for their struggle against suppression of children’s  rights and right to Education for children’s.

When it comes to Education System of India, with more than 74000 schools and more than 30 million enrollments at primary level ,India has one of the largest Education systems in the world. Indian Education system has made significant progress over the  decades specially after  the Indepence but Politics ruined the fruitfull expected results.  In comparison to the other leading countries spending on education our country is far behind  and if we want to see our country  a leader and inspiration in education to other countries then present spending of  3.65 percent of the GDP in 2016-17 must be increased to the highest allotted budget to education ,so that the first priority for any political party would make a right to education as their primary mission , if we want to safeguard our liberty , but we all understand that politics has some limitations so only the mission of achieving a quality education to all can only be achieved if society comes forward in hand with hand with the govt. to serve the children’s , youths and the nation.

To encourage those belonging to economically weaker sections to send their children to school for education and provide nutritious food, the Midday Meal Scheme was launched by the Government of India. The program provides for free lunch on working days to children in primary and upper primary classes in government, government-aided, local body, Education Guarantee Scheme and alternate innovative education centers, Madarsa and Maqtabs supported under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and National Child Labor Project schools run by the Ministry of Labor. This scheme has helped in increasing enrolment, attendance as well as retention of economically backward students in government schools.

Our education system is geared towards teaching and testing knowledge at every level as opposed to teaching skills. “Give a man a fish and you feed him one day, teach him how to catch fishes and you feed him for a lifetime.”  I believe that if you teach a man a skill, you enable him for a lifetime. Knowledge is largely forgotten after the semester exam is over. Still, year after year Indian students focus on cramming information. The best crammers are rewarded by the system. This is one of the fundamental flaws of our education system.

While pondering over ‘Education system’ and quality education in accordance with International standards, I came across with basisof Education system of Developed nations.Finland has held the unofficial title as the country with the world’s best education system, since 2000.  Finland is projected to take the official title in 2017. By outperforming, Japan and the three time winner of ranking system, south Korea. Finland ranked higher in 3 of the indicators of Secondary children in school, and teachers to student ratio for both Primary and Secondary schools.

I urge parents.schools, society to invest in this precious gift of ‘Education’ that will last a lifetime. Let us be inspired by this famous quote from Nelson Mandela and let us start this process of change within our respective homes: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
